The concept of a digital twin was already pioneered during the rescue mission of Apollo 13 in 1970. It wasn’t called a "digital twin", however, until John Vickers of NASA mention edit in a 2010 Roadmap Report.
Today, many manufacturers are adopting digital twins as a virtual representation of their physical environment, their processes or services. This virtual model can be used to run simulations, investigate performance issues and evaluate possible improvements.
Recently, we developed a digital twin in the context of a migration project at a market-leader in the food & beverages industry. For Agoria’s ‘Digital Solutions in manufacturing’ series, digital twin expert Steven Cardoen shared his take on the project, the pitfalls and benefits.
